Obituaries: Fred P. Malizia

July 22, 2013

Fred P. Malizia, of Cornwall, NY, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 in his home beside his beloved wife. Fred was born in West New York, NJ on February 6, 1925. After graduating high school, Fred began his 24 years of dedicated service to our nation in the U.S. Navy, followed by the U.S. Air Force, and culminating his military career with 15 years in the U.S. Army. He retired as a Master Sergeant in the United States Military Academy Band at West Point where he was Section Leader of Percussion in the Concert Band. While in the Army, Fred received his MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Shortly after leaving the service, Fred began his career at Newburgh Free Academy where he was a business teacher and mentor for 27 years. Fred was also an adjunct professor for adult evening classes at NFA for Orange County Community College. Fred was steadfast about education, his students' success and the power of a positive mind. His thirst for knowledge brought him to SUNY New Paltz in pursuit of a doctorate degree. While at NFA, he began what would be 30+ years as tax preparer with Frank Scarzfava Bookkeeping Service. He was also the trusted business manager for 18 years at his daughter's business, the Chiropractic Health Center of Walden, now the Hudson Valley Whole Life Center of Newburgh.

Fred was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend. Nothing gave him greater joy than to be with his "girls", his loving wife and family. Fred was famous for his short one-liners, sure to brighten any moment, even in the most trying times. Along with his million-dollar smile, sparkling eyes, and great wit, he will always be remembered as a gentleman with a dapper sense of style. His passion for music continued throughout his life where he performed as a drummer with numerous bands across the tri-state area. Fred was also known to be both an avid golfer and tennis player where he spent many joyous hours on the court and links with friends.

He leaves behind the love of his life, Dorothy; his two daughters: Marianne Malizia and her husband, Theodore Maichosis; Dr. Carol Ann Malizia and her companion, Kevin Hayes; granddaughter, Michelle Marino (Rodemers) and her husband, Richard Marino. Many of those in our community and across the country were influenced by his loving demeanor and know that Fred has been welcomed into heaven with abundance. The Malizia family would like to extend a special thank you to his doctors: Hossain, Aziz, Wen, Portelli, and Gosselin, who assisted in the longevity of Fred's life.

The family will be receiving friends and family from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, July 23rd at William F. Hogan Funeral Home, 135 Main Street, Highland Falls. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 24th at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Chapel in West Point, immediately followed by a full military burial with honors in West Point Cemetery.
