Aram Casparian of Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY, passed peacefully into God's hands on Monday, July 1st, from a brief illness, with his loving family at his side.
Aram was a gentle, compassionate, humble man who was well respected and well loved by his family, friends, and community. One of his greatest legacies was his gift to touch so many lives with his wisdom, spiritual guidance, and unconditional love. An educator, a committed community member, a spiritual guide to many, a supportive friend, a doting grandfather, loving father and a truly beloved husband, Aram lived a full, blessed life.
Aram was born December 2, 1931 in Peekskill, NY to the late Manook and Perooz Casparian, who emigrated from Armenia. Preceding him in death was his brother, Caspar and sister-in-law, Novart.
Aram was a graduate of Peekskill High School and Bob Jones University, SC. He also received advanced degrees from Columbia University in New York. Aram served in the US Army from 1952-1954.
Aram served as a teacher, elementary and middle school principal and retired in 1990 as a deputy superintendent of the Lakeland School District in Westchester County, NY. His passion for teaching, his love of children and his quiet, confident and compassionate leadership style contributed to a successful career and lifelong cherished relationships.
Aram was a member of the Van Cortlandtville Historical Society where he was instrumental in creating a living museum for students at the Little Red School House. It is here where he enjoyed reenacting the role of a colonial-days school master.
Aram was a faithful member of both the Yorktown Presbyterian Church and Cornwall Presbyterian Church. He was a dedicated leader of the Presbytery of Hudson River serving in many roles including moderator. Aram's service to the community include past president of the Cornwall Lion's Club and executive committee member of the Hudson Valley Hospital Board for over 20 years.
Aram enjoyed many pastimes including cooking, gardening, playing tennis, storytelling, and spending time with his grandchildren. Travelling with friends and family created many memories including a very special trip to his homeland of Armenia. One of Aram's greatest loves was sailing on his boat Aram's Harem, expressly named after his wife and four daughter.
Aram is survived by his loving wife, Nancy; his sister, Armenoosh (husband Edward) Shahbazian; four daughters: Sherrill (Eric) Miller, Michelle Kemp, Suzanne Serbia, and Allison Casparian. Also surviving are his grandchildren: Ethan and Lindsey Miller, Emily and Kyle Kemp and step-grandchildren, including Rafael and Romina Serbia. He also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A Celebration of Aram's Life will be held at Cornwall Presbyterian Church at 222 Hudson Street, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY on Saturday, July 6th at 11 a.m. Visitation will be at Quigley Bros Funeral Home, 337 Hudson Street, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY 12520 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, July 5th.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cornwall Presbyterian Mission Fund (222 Hudson Street, Cornwall on Hudson, NY 12520) or Van Cortlandtville Historical Society (297 Locust Avenue, Cortlandt Manor NY 10567).
