Obituaries: Anthony J. Zanin

Anthony J. Zanin, resident of Cornwall, NY and a Chief Civil Engineer for John Arborio Inc. in Poughkeepsie, NY, passed away on Friday, June 21, 2013 at St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital, Newburgh. He was 89. His wife, Virginia E. Duffy Zanin passed away July 20, 2008.

Born August 27, 1923 in Vintondale, PA he was the son of Biagio Zanin and Margherita Coronet Zanin.

Survivors include his sister, Frances V. Kent of Ft. Myers, FL; his son, John M. Zanin and wife, Sharon of Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY; his daughters, Regina Zanin of Greensboro, NC and Lucille Nahow of Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY; grandchildren: Melissa Flanagan, Justin Nahow, Anthony J. Zanin and John Michael Zanin; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Zanin was predeceased by his parents, wife and sister, Elida P Muro.

A family statement reads: "Tony was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He often entertained his family with stories of growing up in Highland Falls with West Point as his playground. He enlisted in 1943 into the Army Air Force as a 2nd LT and graduated from Bombardier School, Victorville CA. He served overseas with the 8th Air Force 384th Group, 547th Squadron as bombardier on the B17. He enjoyed telling the story of being stationed at Santa Ana air base, with Joe DiMaggio as his physical education instructor. He was discharged in 1945 with the rank of 1st LT. He attended Syracuse University graduating June 4, 1951. He was a NYS Licensed Land Surveyor. He was married in 1954 to Virginia E. Duffy, whom he met at Syracuse, and they began married life in Cornwall NY. He spent his career with John Arborio Inc., engineering numerous roadway projects, such as the NYS Thruway. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, Virginia and spending time with his grandchildren. In later years he became well known at the Cornwall Public Library and often seen taking many walks around town.

He belonged to Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, Syracuse University; 384th Bomb Group (H) Inc 8th Air Force; Veteran of Foreign Wars Life Member of Post No 9256, Ft. Montgomery NY; member of St. Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Church. He and Virginia delivered Meals on Wheels in the Cornwall area.


We would like to thank the nurses, doctors and staff of 3 North and ICU of St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital. We will be forever grateful for the care he received in the last weeks of our father's life.


Visitation will be Monday, June 24th from 6 to 9 p.m at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home, 337 Hudson St., Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY 12520. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, June 25th at 10 a.m. in St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, 340 Hudson St., Cornwall-On-Hudson. Burial with Military Honors is to take place at St. Thomas of Canterbury Cemetery in Cornwall.
