Obituaries: James B. Mahan, III

James B. Mahan, III of Monticello, NY and formerly of Cornwall, NY passed away May 23, 2013 at Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris, NY. He was 58 years old.

Jim was a retired New York State Corrections Sergeant, working at Otisville, Bedford and Sullivan Correctional facilities.

Born May 28, 1954 and raised in Cornwall, NY, he was the son of James B. Mahan Sr. and Alma Gallagher Mahan. Jim was married at Saint Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Monticello, NY in 1980 to his wife, Susan, who survives at home. Jim was a graduate of Cornwall High School (1972), OCCC, and SUNY Brockport. Jim was a criminal justice and political science major, and loved discussing politics with friends. Jim's proudest accomplishment was parenting his daughter, Katherine.

He loved the Yankees, Giants, Duke basketball, and boxing. Jim found great joy in caring for his dogs, Buster Posada, and Storm Pettitte.

Survivors include his wife, Susan B. Strang Mahan, at home; his parents, James and Alma Mahan of Cornwall, NY; daughter, Katherine E. Mahan and her fiance, Luke Hobaica of New Hartford, NY; brothers: Mark Mahan of Cornwall and Brian Mahan and his wife, Jennifer of Walden, NY; sister, Monica Sullivan and her husband, Richard of Ft. Montgomery, NY; nephews and nieces: Sean, Holly, Timothy, Jacqueline, Amanda, Kelley, Marcy, Jennifer, Melissa, Kristy, Joshua, Thomas, Marshall; parents-in-law, Gustav and Rose Strang of Monticello; brothers-in-law: Michael Strang, John Strang (Judy) of Middleburg, FL, Peter Strang (April) of Monticello; sisters-in-law: Rose Comfort (Ron) and Barbara Ketcham (Evan) of Monticello; his uncle, Joseph (Mary) Gallagher, of Highland Falls, NY; his aunts, Kaye (Pete) Rose of Cornwall, and Helen Bosch of Highland Falls, NY. Jim is also survived by many beloved cousins. Jim is also survived by his very special best friend since their sandbox days, Herm (Kevin) Brennan and his wife, Norma of Marlboro, NY; and his beloved dogs: Buster Posada and Storm Pettitte.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28th at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home, 337 Hudson St., Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY 12520. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 29th at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, 340 Hudson St., Cornwall-on-Hudson. Burial is to follow in St. Thomas Cemetery, Cornwall.
