Obituaries: Anne Turner Warren

Anne Turner Warren, died on February 25, 2013 at home in Cornwall, NY. She was 85 years old. She was born on March 7, 1927 in Staten Island, NY to Arthur Oswald Bryan-Turner and Dorothy Iris Barlow.

At the age of 9, she moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico where she lived until leaving for college. She attended Sophie Newcomb College of Tulane University, graduating with a BFA in Art. It was there that she met her husband of 64 years, Porter Hilliard Warren. They were married in Santurce, Puerto Rico at the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista and, and lived in New Orleans while Porter attended medical school.

Anne was a noted artist who worked and taught in the Hudson Valley area for much of her life. She received a Masters Degree in Art from State University of New York at New Paltz in 1986 and continued to show her work throughout the area. Her preferred media were watercolor and print making. She was a member of a number of artistic organizations in the Hudson Valley, was a founding member of the Real Gallery in Cornwall, and was a docent at Storm King Art Center in New Windsor, NY. She taught at the Garrison Art Center, in Garrison, NY, and enjoyed teaching art to children throughout her career, both privately and at the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum in Cornwall.

Anne was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Cornwall, where she served on the Alter Guild. She was an avid supporter of environmental causes, particularly in the Hudson Valley Region, which was reflected in her work.

Anne was preceded in death by her husband Porter Hilliard Warren, her parents, Arthur Oswald Bryan-Turner and Dorothy Iris Barlow, her sons, Bryan Hilliard and Phillip Hilliard, and her son-in-law, Leland Gene Avery.

Anne is survived by her two daughters, Dorothy (Ron) Terry of Cazenovia, NY and Pamela (Peter Lawrence) Warren of Lexington, MA; her son, Edward (Carla Castillo) Warren, of Philadelphia, PA; and five grandchildren, Andrew, Jane, Claire, Turner and García.

A private funeral service was held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Cornwall, NY on Thursday, February 28th. Burial was followed at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Mountainville, NY.
