Obituaries: Barbara Conroy Vervaet
February 13, 2013
Barbara C. Vervaet, 84, of Cornwall, New York, passed away on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at her residence.
Barbara is survived by her daughters, Susan Vervaet Riveland (and son-in-law Ralph Riveland) of Branchville, N.J and MaryAnne Vervaet of Clifton Park, N.Y.; a sister, Kathleen M. Charles of Fair Oaks Ranch, TX; and two grandchildren, Gregory F. Lamas and David J. Lamas, two nieces: Kimberly A. Charles and Leslie M. Comerford, and nephew Craig Conroy Charles.
Barbara Conroy Vervaet was born July 25, 1928 in New York, N.Y. to the late Ralph and Phyllis (Scott) Conroy. She was a graduate of Rutherford, N.J. High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree with an R.N. from the Cornell School of Nursing in New York, N.Y. Barbara married Albert H. Vervaet in 1949 and moved to New York State, where she began her nursing career in Columbia County. She and her family moved to Washingtonville, N.Y. in 1955, where Barbara continued her nursing work in local hospitals in Orange County. After earning N.Y. State teaching certification, Barbara was hired in 1959 as a school nurse teacher in the Washingtonville Public Schools. She served the school district for over thirty years, retiring in 1991. Barbara loved her daughters and two grandsons deeply, and was proud of their life journeys. Barbara is remembered fondly by the many students she served as an advocate, a good listener, and a friend. Her nurse's room was a safe haven for many, and she cherished the students with whom she would later see grown, working in the community and prospering.
Barbara was especially proud of her Irish roots. She enjoyed traveling and made a number of trips to Europe; several times as a nurse chaperone for high school band tours. Her trips to Ireland were experiences that she cherished the most. She was a highly literate person with an insatiable appetite for reading. She especially loved James Joyce, Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and the poetry of Yeats. Unbeknownst to many, she wrote many fine poems of her own in her earlier years. Barbara was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Cornwall, N.Y., where she served on the altar guild. In her retirement, Barbara also worked as a volunteer at Cornwall Hospital and Meals on Wheels. She loved the Hudson River, and spent many enjoyable hours in Cornwall's riverside park.
