Obituaries: Porter Hilliard Warren

Porter Hilliard Warren, MD, died on January 12, 2013 at home in Cornwall, N.Y. He was 88 years old.
He was born on September 6, 1924 in Greenville, Alabama to Porter Hilliard and Effie Belle Warren.
Porter spent the first 17 years of his life in Greenville and attended Greenville High School, where he graduated in 1941. After high school, he joined the US Army Air Forces and was stationed in Arizona where he was trained as a pilot and became an instructor. He later served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. After the war, he attended Tulane University and Tulane Medical School on the GI Bill, graduating from Medical School in 1952.
He began his medical career as a general practitioner in Cornwall, N.Y. Later, he studied psychiatry at the New York Psychoanalytic Society. He worked as a psychiatrist and served as head of Psychiatry at the Westchester Division of Cornell Medical School at New York Hospital from 1961 until 1976. After leaving New York Hospital, Dr. Warren returned to private practice in Cornwall, NY, working actively until the age of 84 in a community for which he cared deeply.
After meeting at Tulane University, Porter married Anne Bryan-Turner in 1949 in Santurce, Puerto Rico at the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista. They were happily married for 64 years.
Porter was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Cornwall where he served on the Vestry and as Senior Warden. He was a board member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness and a board member of Planned Parenthood of Orange County. He was a musician, avid sailor, and student of philosophy.
Porter was preceded in death by his parents, Porter Hilliard and Effie Belle Warren, his sons, Bryan Hilliard and Phillip Hilliard, and his son-in-law, Leland Gene Avery.
Porter is survived by his spouse, Anne, of Cornwall, NY; two daughters, Dorothy (Ron) Terry of Cazenovia, NY and Pamela (Peter Lawrence) Warren of Lexington, MA; his son, Edward (Carla Castillo)Warren, of Philadelphia, PA; and five grandchildren, Andrew, Jane, Claire, Turner and García.
A funeral service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Cornwall, NY on Wednesday, January 16 at 10:30am. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Mountainville, NY.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to The National Alliance on Mental Illness (www.nami.org), or St. John’s Episcopal Church- Cornwall, NY.
