Rev. James W. Anderson, 92, passed away on Monday, September 17th at Campbell Hall Rehabilitation Center.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 66 years, Lois Anderson, an accomplished pianist, who together with her husband helped create and sustain a lifelong Christian ministry.
Rev. Anderson is survived by their children: Lynn Gage and her husband Jerry of Cornwall-On-hudson, N.Y., Carol Grace Anderson of Nashville, TN., son James W. Anderson, Jr. and his wife Barbara of NYC. He is pre-deceased by his youngest daughter Mary Beth, who died in 1995. He’s survived by his brothers, Dr. Gordon S. Anderson and his wife, Carol, of Ossining, NY and Edward Marshall Anderson and his wife, Galyna, of Minneapolis, MN. Other survivors include grandchildren, Jacqueline Gage Blea and her husband, Vincent, of Avon, CT, Jay Gage and his wife, Kimberly, of Balmville, NY, and Rory Gage of Williamsburg, NY. Great-grandchildren include Nathan, Cady, Andrew, and Benjamin Blea, and Vivian, Luke and Ashley Gage.
Born in Fargo, North Dakot, on July 11, 1915, Rev. Anderson was a graduate of the National Bible Institute, received a Bachelor’s Degree from Bloomfield College in N.J., and a Master’s degree plus doctoral credits from Teacher’s College at Columbia University.
Over the course of a long and distinguished ministry, Rev. Anderson served as pastor at eleven churches around the country and was named a distinguished fellow and president of the Classes of the Dutch Reformed church of America.
An experienced pilot and sailor for more than half a century, Rev. Anderson combined lifelong passions for aviation and boating with his deep and abiding commitment to enrich the lives of inner city youth.
He became a high school guidance counselor in the South Bronx, pioneering many programs for young people including Civil Air Patrol and Sea Explorers. Countless students recall how Rev. Anderson’s influence helped redirect the course of their lives.
In the late 1940’s, Rev. Anderson and his brother, Gordon, also a minister, joined forces to create a youth center in Brooklyn, NY. Later, they expanded their respective ministries, with Dr. Gordon Anderson founding Tele-Missions International., and Rev. James Anderson and his wife Lois launching Jubilee Ranch of Godeffroy, NY. Their Christian summer camp welcomed 200 underprivileged children a week from New York City, offering a respite from the hardships of city life.
Residents for many years of Ridgefield, NJ, the Andersons re-located to Cornwall-on-Hudson in the year 2000. There, Rev. Anderson served as chaplain of a local troop of Boy Scouts of America and taught aviation classes. Rev. Anderson continued to fly airplanes until the age of 86.
A memorial service will be held at the Cornwall United Methodist Church at 196 Main Street, Cornwall, N.Y. at 11am on Saturday, September 22nd, 2007 followed by a luncheon in the reception hall.
