Mary Hazirjian. |
May 23, 2011
Mary Ellen (Marja) Hazirjian lost a long and valiant battle against ovarian cancer and passed away May 23, 2011.
Born February 5, 1957, she grew up on Long Island, and moved to the Cornwall area from New Jersey shortly after her marriage to Deke Hazirjian in 1983.
It was here that Mary raised her family of three children: 27-year-old Davin, a civil engineer, Zachary, 24 years old and planning a career in forestry, and 18-year-old Kaija, now completing her freshman year at The University of the Arts, in Philadelphia. Their father, Deke, is an Emmy-winning TV lighting designer.
Mary, spiritual by nature, was also a competitive tennis player and successful merchant as well. She operated Anna Liisa Women’s Boutique on Hudson Street in the Village of Cornwall, and closed it during the early signs of the disease that would eventually prove fatal.
Her family was by her side when Mary died. They convey her personal wish that in lieu of flowers, a charitable donation be made to the International Child Art Foundation (www.ICAF.org), or to UNICEF.
A memorial service for Mary Hazirjian will be held at 11 am, Thursday, May 26, at the Cornwall Presbyterian Church, 222 Hudson St. (& Church St.) in the Village.
Comments:
Mary was an inspiration to us all for her courage in fighting the disease which eventually claimed this beautiful person. Our thoughts and prayers are with Deke and the children as they struggle with her passing . God Bless and keep the soul of Mary and hold her close as she is now free of her pain. Dear Deke, Amy and I are devastated by your loss. Mary was one of the most beautiful people we have ever known, inside and out. Her beauty and grace eclipsed all around her. Know that we, along with our children Jimmy, Lisa and Jamie, share in your pain, sadly accepting it in return for her relief. We will miss her unbearably.
Love and prayers from us all, Jim & Amy Lawless

I didn't know Marja. But on Thursday Sept.23rd, I was hiking on Schunemunk Mountain. I saw the beautiful memorial that was made in her honor. I've been hiking these trails for 25 years and I'm sure that we have been on the mountain at the same time. The first thing that I saw was the plaque at the base of the tree that said Let It Be. I was touched. You must miss her dearly. My condolences on your loss. Bob Levesque
