Obituaries: Karl Brandl

Karl Brandl
Karl Brandl
March 23, 2011

Karl, with a K Brandl, of Cornwall, NY, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at the New Windsor Country Inn, surrounded by loved ones. He was 98 years young. Karl was born in Munich, Germany on August 27, 1912. During his youth he was a proud member of the mountain rescue patrol and frequently spoke of his exploits rescuing wayward skiers and climbers. He was a trained cabinet maker until World War II. He was in the army during the war, was captured and held as a POW for several years.

He married the love of his life, Christine, in 1935. They were happily married for 56 years. Christine passed away in 1991 and Karl frequently said she was my only one. Karl and Christine had a daughter Olga, who moved to America in 1952, and the couple soon followed in 1954.

Karl was employed by Brookhaven National Labs until retirement, as a custom cabinet maker. Karl would design and build custom cabinets according to specific needs. The couple resided in Islip, NY where Karl designed and built a Bavarian style home in the middle of suburbia. In the early 80's the couple moved to the Hudson Valley, settling in Newburgh, and then Cornwall. Karl loved the Hudson Valley because it reminded him of his homeland. He was a lover of nature and a long time member of the Audubon Society.

Karl was a life member of the Cornwall Volunteer Ambulance Corps. His life was dedicated to being of service to others. Karl had friends far and wide and often marveled at how many Christmas cards he received and sent. For those who knew Karl he was a good friend and a great listener. Although he struggled with chronic pain he never complained and would say Ah, you have to pay for your sins, ha-ha. He had a great sense of humor and zest for life, and many a weekend one could find Karl at the Black Forest Mill, where he was the unofficial mayor. Karl was an avid collector of coins, stamps, minerals and people. Once you met Karl you were part of his great collection of friends.

Karl is survived by his Granddaughter, Suzi Campbell, and his great-granddaughter, Shayla. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on June 4, 2011 at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home, 337 Hudson St. Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY.

In lieu of flowers please make a memorial donation to the charity of one's choice.
