February 08, 2011
Sunday evening, February 6th, 2011, Alice Adams Nolan who was born June 25th, 1918, passed from this earth at the age of 92. She was born in Highland Mills at home, the child of David William Adams and Anna Mapes Owens and was a distant descendant of the house of John Bull.
Alice lived a very happy and full life. She had the rare talent of always seeing the good in people and was positive about everything in her life. Her contagious laugh and infectious smile brought happiness to all who knew her.
She shared her generous spirit with many and was rewarded with numbers of good friends. She was a trusted confidant, loving wife, proud mother, prouder grandmother, and proudest great-grandmother. Above all, she had a warm heart. She will be missed.
Until last week Alice resided in her long time family home on Rose Hill Park, Cornwall, NY. This was only possible because these last years were rich with friends from church and her neighborhood. Especially important to her were the Stoneburner family: Patty, Mark, Troy, Amanda and Susannah from across the street, who adopted her as their Cornwall Gramma, Mike Jacques, her adopted grandson, living in her home and Steve Duggan a tenant, but much more. Betsylee Walters, her caregiver and friend was indispensable and without whom Alice could not have maintained her independence. Thank you all, she loved you all and appreciated all you did, everyday!!!!!
Alice was the wife of the late J. Emmett Nolan to whom she was married on October 8th, 1944. She bore three sons: Jim in Cornwall-on-Hudson, David living in Australia and a baby who survived for a short time after a difficult delivery that almost cost her life.
She is survived by her two living sons and four grandchildren. Jennifer Nolan Straub and Elizabeth Nolan are children of Jim and Barbara, the former Barbara Feil, and Alistair and Isabella Nolan are children of David and Tracy Nolan of Sydney, Australia.
Within the last four years Jennifer and her husband, Jeff Straub added Katie, 3, and Ryan and Andy Straub, both 9 months old to her loving family circle.
Growing up, Alice was an excellent student and very bright woman who excelled at everything she tried. She was especially proud to tell anyone that she scored a perfect 100% on the Geometry Regents Exam at Central Valley High School. Professionally, she was a life long legal secretary and a paralegal before the term existed. Don McCann, Esq. a lifelong friend and employer, hired her directly out of secretarial school and employed her for most of her adult life.
St. John's Episcopal Church was her life and rock where she was a member for well more than fifty years. In the late 60s she served for many years as Senior Warden, St. John's chief operating officer, and was the first woman elected to this position in the New York Archdiocese.
At about the same time the Cornwall Zoning Board of Appeals needed a recording clerk, a position she held for several years, eventually being appointed a voting member of the ZBA on which she served for more than 25 years.
Planned Parenthood was a particular passion for Alice. She served on the board and as the President of Newburgh Planned Parenthood for years and remained a supporter and contributor until her death.
Her favorite pastimes were her friends and playing bridge with those friends and as a member of the Red Hat Society where ladies of like mind and substance socialized and supported each other.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to St. John's Episcopal Church, 66 Clinton Street, Cornwall, NY, 12518 or to Planned Parenthood on its website at www.plannedparenthood.org.
Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, February 10 at the Quigley Brother's Funeral Home, 337 Hudson Street, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY. The funeral service will be 10 a.m., Friday at St. John's Episcopal Church, Clinton and Hazen Sts., Cornwall, NY.
Alice and Emmett's ashes will be committed at St. John's Episcopal Church at a private ceremony at a later date.
Arrangements are by Kevin Quigley of Quigley Brothers Funeral Home, 337 Hudson St. Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY. Please send condolences to the family at P.O. Box 361, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY, 12520.
