Obituaries: John (Jack) Cooney

John (Jack) Cooney, a life-long resident of Cornwall-on-Hudson and Cornwall, NY, passed away January 30, 2011 at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital – Newburgh NY.  He was 83 years old.

Mr. Cooney was retired from the Army AthleticsAssociation, USMA West Point.  He was the son of John Cooney and CatherineHaher Cooney, born on September 5, 1927 in Cornwall-on-Hudson,NY.

Survivors include his brother, Robert A. Cooney Sr. of Cornwall; nephews:Robert A. Cooney Jr. of Cornwall-on-Hudson, Steven J. Cooney and his wife, Cynthia, of Walden, Michael D. Cooney and his wife, Eileen, of Cornwall and Christopher M. Cooney of Monroe, CT; grand-nephews and nieces: Matthew and Lauren Cooney, Tim Brennan, Katelyn Cooney, Brian and Megan Cooney. He was predeceased by his brother, Joseph Cooney.

Family statement: “Jack was an usher at the 9:30 Mass at St. Thomas of Canterbury church for 60 years. Thank you to the staff at Wingate at Beacon and St.Luke’s Dialysis Unit.”

Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday February 3 at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home, 337 Hudson St., Cornwall-on-Hudson. A 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday February 4 at St. Thomas of CanterburyChurch, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY. Burial is tofollow the Mass in St. Thomas Cemetery, Cornwall.

Arrangements are by Kevin Quigley of QuigleyBros. Funeral Home, 227 Hudson St., Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY.

I have such nice memories of Jackie Cooney. He lived on our street, Wood Avenue years. Sometimes when I needed a ride to work at West Point he would give me and my Mom a ride. He was a lovely man with such a generous spirit and a really nice smile.This is the way I will always remember Jackie. God Bless you Jackie.
