Saverio (“Sam”) Joseph Scalise, of Cornwall-on-Hudson, passed away on Sunday, December 12, 2010, at the Newburgh campus of St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital. He was 85.
The oldest son of the late Antonio Scalise and Concetta Castagna, he was born September 25, 1925 in Highland Falls, NY. In 1954, he married Rose Margaret Fontana, who survives at home.
Sam was a U.S. Navy World War II Veteran, having served as a Gunner’s Mate from 1943 to 1946 in the Pacific Theater. For 45 years, he worked for the Department of Mechanics at West Point, NY, and upon retirement, managed Prima Pizza in Cornwall, NY. Sam was a member of the Knights of Columbus, in Highland Falls, NY, and a member of Storm King Golf Club in Cornwall.
In addition to his loving wife of 56 years, he is survived by his daughter Laura Fanning and husband Peter, of Cornwall, NY; his son Anthony J. Scalise, of Cornwall, NY; his nephew Dr. Paul J. Scalise, of Ortley Beach, NJ; and many cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his two younger brothers Louis Scalise and Paul (“Cy”) J. Scalise.
Family Statement: We would like to thank the entire staff at St. Lukes Cornwall Hospital. A special thanks to Dr. Eugene Schreiner, a friend and physician. We also thank Toni, his caregiver and friend, and the staff at Good Samaritan Hospital as well as Fr. Bill and Fr. Peter from Sacred Heart Church .
Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 15, 2010, from 5 to 8 pm at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home, 337 Hudson Street, Cornwall on Hudson, NY 12520.
A mass of Christian Burial will be 10 AM on Thursday, December 16, 2010, at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church 340 Hudson St. Cornwall-On-Hudson NY . Burial will be in the St. Thomas of Canterbury Cemetery in Cornwall, NY.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75231.
