Obituaries: Joan Lois Carpenter
September 21, 2010
Joan Lois Carpenter, nee Scribner, passed from this earth the morning of September 20, 2010, surrounded by family. Joan lived a full and busy life as a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother, a teacher, and as an all-around loving and caring person to the people who were part of her life.
Joan was born April 8th, 1930, in St. Johnsbury, Vermont to Ann Dahlbeck Scribner and Warner Benjamin Scribner. As a child she contracted polio, but true to her fighting spirit and grit she recovered to lead a normal life. In her later life post polio complications were hurdles that she determinedly overcame. After graduating from Lyndon Institute with the DAR Good Citizenship award, she attended the University of Vermont where she met her future husband Richard Carlton Carpenter. They married in Lyndonville, June 27th, 1953, and then removed to Cornwall, New York. For the last 57 years their home has been on Mineral Springs Road.
Joan and Richard had two children, a son, David Scribner born in 1955, and a daughter, Stacey Anne born in 1964. Joan was a homemaker during the early years, but she was also an active volunteer in the community. For many years she was a Pink Lady at the Cornwall Hospital and later served as the president of the Cornwall Hospital Auxiliary. In 1973, as her children became more independent, she joined the staff at Cornwall Central High School as a lab teacher in the science Ddepartment. She retired from teaching in 1992.
After retiring Joan and Richard did some trans-continental traveling. The highlight of these trips was the visit to Sweden from where her beloved maternal grandparents emigrated in the early twentieth century.
Jan was an avid card player and was a consummate Bridge player. In the summers she vacationed at Shadow Lake in Glover, Vermont; for many years using the family camp. Camp at Glover was a gathering place for her family that was very meaningful to her.
Joan supported her husband’s membership in Rotary International and they would host and entertain exchange students. She became a Paul Harris Fellow.
Joan is survived by her husband, Richard; her son, David, of Cabot,Vermont, and her daughter Stacey Anne Wygant and husband, George, of Marlboro, New York. She is survived by four grandchildren; Lindsey Wygant Kupperblatt and husband Aaron of Marlboro, New York; James Wygant of Marlboro, New York; Zara Duguay Windsor, and husband Eric, of Birmingham, Alabama; and Sam Carpenter of Cabot, Vermont. Joan was thrilled to become a great grandmother in October of 2009 to Kinley Adalette Windsor. Her second great grandchild is expected in January, 2011. She is also survived by her sister Betty Ann Dahl, of Manhasset, New York, and by many nieces and nephews.
