Obituaries: Catherine Helen Prusinksi
September 16, 2010
Catherine Prusinski died peacefully at her home in Cornwall on September 15, 2010. Her family was with her at the time of her death providing love, comfort and support.
Catherine was the beloved mother of Daniel Wagner of Astoria, New York and her stepdaughters, Alicia Prusinski of Vail, Colorado and Kristin Prusinski of Stuart, Florida. Also surviving her husband, Henry Prusinski of Cornwall, her mother Helen Karpinski and brother Vardi Karpinski of Glen Cove, New York, her sister Patricia of Miami, Florida and brother John Karpinski of Tampa, Florida.
Catherine was born in 1951 in Glen Cove, New York to Helen and Vardi Karpinski Sr.. After graduating Glen Cove High School, she attended Ladycliff College in Highland Falls, New York ,where she earned her B.A. Degree and her New York State teaching credentials in elementary education. Catherine subsequently earned her Master of Science in Education from the State University of New York at New Paltz and later, a Master of Science in Instructional Technology from the New York Institute of Technology at Old Westbury, New York.
Catherine had a lifelong and distinguished career as an educator. She taught for fifteen years at the New York Military Academy before joining the teaching staff at Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary school as a 5th grade teacher in 1994. She later went on to teach computer technology at both COH Elementary and the Willow Avenue School.
Catherine was a very dedicated teacher who put much effort into planning and teaching effective and creative lessons. She was a warm, loving and caring person, characteristics which she brought into her teaching life. Her main concern was always to best serve her students’ learning in the classroom and to support her teaching colleagues particularly with technology-based lessons and technical assistance. Catherine strove for excellence in her professional life and worked hard every day to achieve this goal.
Catherine had a deep and abiding commitment to her Catholic faith. She was baptized and confirmed in St. Hyacinth Church in Glen Cove, New York. She and her husband have been long-time parishioners of St. Thomas of Canterbury Church in Cornwall-on-Hudson.
Catherine was also a member of Storm King Art Center, Mohonk Preserve, Ladycliff College Alumnae Association, National Education Association and the Cornwall Central Teachers Association.
Visitation be from 2 to 4 pm on Friday, September 17 at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home, 337 Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY 12520. Funeral Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 am on Saturday, September 18 at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church with a private burial at the St. Thomas Cemetery.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Catherine H. Prusinski Award to be given annually to a Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary School student. Please make donation checks payable to the Cornwall Central School District and mail them to the Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary School, care of Ms. Gail Wehmann, Principal.
