Obituaries: Elizabeth Anna Pearl McCullough

Elizabeth Anna Pearl (Miller) McCullough of Firthcliffe Heights, Cornwall, wife of the late Frank D. McCullough, died at home January 5, 2010 in her 96th year. Daughter of Charles William and Bertha Faigle Miller, she was born June 22, 1914, in Weehawken N. J. She was predeceased by her sister Josephine D. Stratis and brother William G. Miller. Family, her faithful dog, Pierre, and her long-time, caring aids, Eva Neponuceno and Carmita Cordova, were with her at the end.
A graduate of Newburgh schools and the State Normal School at New Paltz, Mrs. McCullough was a teacher for 50 years. She began her career in the Newburgh School District at the old Grand and Montgomery Street schools and retired from the Cornwall School District in 1984 after having taught second grade at Willow Avenue and Lee Road schools for 29 years. During World War II she served with the Office of Strategic Services, the predecessor of the CIA.
She had been a member of the Girl Scout Council, Temple Hill Association, Cornwall Central Teacher's Association, the Retired Teacher's Association, and was a Past President of the American Legion Auxiliary. A long-time member of the Cornwall Ambulance Corps, she was a certified Emergency Medical Technician and taught EMT courses. She was delegate to the Fifth District NY State Volunteer Ambulance and First Aid Association and served on the Disaster Committee. Her church association was Christ Lutheran Church in Newburgh where she served on the Church council and was a member of the choir and altar guild. In 1994 she received the Ministerial Society Award for Churchwoman of the Year.
Survivors include her nephew, William G. Stratis, and his wife, Joyce, and niece, Elaine S. Vinson, all of Firthcliffe Heights. Six great-nieces: Becky Vinson Claypool, her husband, Stephen Keyser, and daughter, Kristyn Claypool, of Fresno, CA; Heidi Stratis Kane, and her husband, Brian, and children, Caitilin and Andrew, of Bethlehem, PA.; Kristy Vinson Poplawski, her husband, David, and children Joshua, Amanda and Mathew, of Schenectady, NY; Wendy Stratis Dolatta, daughter Desiree, son Devin Dolatta, his partner Jessica Hunter and their daughter, Chloe Willow, of Cornwall; Leslie Stratis Baum, husband Todd and children Rebecca Jane and Jessica Claire of Wallkill, NY; Stacy Stratis Fowler, husband Joseph and daughter Taylor Lynn of St Augustine, FL.
Four great-nephews: Richard Vinson Jr. and his wife, Susan, Robin Vinson; Gary Vinson, wife Suzi and children Necole McLean, Jannelle O'Connor, and Keith O'Connor, all of Cornwall, and George Vinson of New Windsor, NY.; one cousin: Elsie Lobig Sauntry, of Wallkill.
Visitation will be on Saturday, January 16 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at the Quigley Bros. Funeral Home, 337 Hudson St, Cornwall on Hudson.
The Funeral Service will be at 2 PM on Sunday, January 17 at Christ Lutheran Church, Fullerton Ave and South St, Newburgh, with the Rev Ernst A. Mossl officiating.
