Henry Kane Sr., a longtime resident of Vails Gate, NY, died on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at the Castle Point Veterans Nursing Home. He was 88 years old.
Mr. Kane was the eighth child of twelve born to Lydia Cummings Kane and George A. Kane. Henry and his twin brother, James, were born in Middletown, NY on December 18, 1920.
He and his brother Richard served with the Big Red One during WWII and were captured in North Africa during Operation Torch. They were held as prisoners of war for almost three years in Italian and German POW camps. Recently, his war time experiences were added to the Veterans History Project at the National Archives.
After the war, Henry worked for a short time at Firth Carpet of Cornwall, NY and Majestic Weaving of Newburgh, NY. During the 1950's, he was a member of the Bricklayers, Masons and Plasterers International Union of America and later became a masonry contractor for more than 50 years. Mr. Kane retired in from the West Point Military Academy masonry shop after 27 years.
He was a member of the New Windsor American Legion Post 1796 for more than 30 years serving in various capacities. He was also a member of the Montgomery American Legion Post 521 for several years. In 1995, Mr. Kane joined the American Ex-Prisoners of War association and served with the Vails Gate Volunteer Fire Company from 1954 until 1979 before becoming a benevolent member.
Mr. Kane is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gertrude Mae Kane, formerly Gertrude Tricarico of Highland Mills, NY. Mae is a resident at Elant Nursing Home in Wappingers Falls, NY. Also surviving are their children George H. Kane of Vails Gate, NY, Henry Kane Jr. of Walkill, NY, Kevin Kane of Vancouver, WA and Karen Kane of Vails Gate, NY. He has three grandchildren, four great grandchildren and more than 40 nieces and nephews. His sisters Rose Bordonali, Loretta Tooley, Eleanor Davis and Lydia Decker as well as six of his seven brothers Roy, Walter, Durwood, James, Harry and Joseph all predeceased him. His surviving brother, Richard, lives with his wife Marie in Montgomery, NY.
Viewing and Services will be held on Sat March 7, 2009, between 2 pm and 5 pm at Quigley Brothers Funeral Home, 337 Hudson St, Cornwall on Hudson, NY, (845-534-9424). The burial will be held at a later date at the Orange County Veterans Cemetery in Goshen, NY. In lieu of flowers, Mr. Kane wished that you would make a memorial contribution to the Disabled American Veterans, PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250.
