Tom Doyle, a retired New York City police officer, pursues his photos with the zeal of a detective. He returns several times to the location and precisely plans the hour when he will shoot, as he did in the photo of Cornwall Bay.
The first one he took on Sunday morning, February 24, as the sun rose over the Hudson Highlands to the east. This is how Doyle describes the shot: “The idea was to book-end the shot with the sun breaking the horizon on the left and the lit gateway on the right. The overall tone of the shot is so cold that even the bald sky is acceptable.“
The second photo was also shot on Sunday from Plum Point in New Windsor. Doyle says: “I liked the rippling snow and ice on the beach. It was about 10 degrees and the water was dead calm so I titled the shot 'Surf's Down'.”
