General News: School Budget Vote

May 20, 2020

As part of Executive Order No. 202.26, the vote this year will be conducted entirely by Absentee Ballot. The requirement to complete an application has been suspended. Absentee Ballots will be automatically mailed to qualified voters in the District with a postage paid return envelope to assist the community with returning the Absentee Ballot by mail.

The Cornwall Central Shcool District mailed absentee ballots to voters. Ballots for the budget vote and board of elections must be received by June 9, 2020. You can also drop it off at the District Office. For more information click here!

Absentee Ballots will contain two propositions -- one for the Cornwall Central School District budget and one for the Cornwall Public Library budget. The Absentee Ballots will also contain the names of individuals running for three (3) seats on the Cornwall Board of Education and the names of the individuals running for three (3) seats on the Cornwall Public Library Board of Directors.

The 2020-21 School Budget is $74,544,952

The 2020-21 Budget reflects a 1.38% increase in spending over 2019-20.

With the exception of two (2) additional technology support positions, the 2020-21 budget is a roll-over budget – whereby only the current year’s programs and operations are rolled forward to the next year with updated costs.

Should the 2020-21 Proposed Budget be defeated on June 9, 2020, the Board of Education has two choices:
1) Forgo holding a second budget vote and immediately adopt a contingency budget.
2) Hold a second budget vote and submit to the voters the same or a revised budget. If the
budget is defeated a second time, the Board must adopt a contingency budget.

What is a contingency budget?
Under a contingency budget, the tax levy for 2020-21 must reflect a 0% increase over the
current 2019-20 tax levy.
