General News: Former Teacher accused of Abuse
October 25, 2019
A former Cornwall Central High School teacher is accused of sexually abusing a teenage girl between 1970-72.
Since The Child Victims Act extended the statue of limitations for a survivor of child sexual abuse in criminal and civil case in New York, victims have 1 year to come forward and press criminal charges relating to any past abuse. The victim states that the teacher, retired Orange County Judge Jeffrey Berry, began grooming her at the age of 16 while she was a student at CCHS.
The victim said that her and Jeffrey Berry had sex in his car and in his bedroom. The lawsuit also accuses school staff members of not reporting the behavior.
The victims father became aware of the abuse and had a meeting with the school superintendent and Berry at the time. Berry remained an employee until he left to attend law school.
Berry is currently on the Orange County Board of Ethics.
