Obituaries: Edward B. Norey

December 01, 2018

Edward B. Norey of Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, November 29, 2018. He was 91.

The son of the late William and Mary Pazenski Norey, he was born on March 21, 1927 in Brooklyn, NY.

Enlisting in 1944, Ed went into active service after graduating Manhattan High School of Aviation Trades in 1945. He served his country as a soldier at home as well as in the Mediterranean Theater in the Army’s 198th Ordnance Base Depot Company. Originally trained as an airplane technician and aviation mechanic, he also served as a unit supply clerk and a cook. He was later promoted to the rank of Corporal and served as the Administrative Non-Commissioned Officer for his unit. He continued to serve his nation for nearly another 3 years in the 636th Ordnance Reserve Company as part of U.S. Army Reserves. During his 5 years of military service from 1945-1950, CPL Norey was recognized as a marksman with the M1 Garand rifle and was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal as well as the WWII Victory Medal and the Army Good Conduct Medal.

Ed and Irene Gasiorowski married on May 15, 1949 at Our Lady Of Consolation Church, Williamsburg, Brooklyn. They resided in Williamsburg and Greenpoint, Brooklyn, later moving to Pearl River in 1966 and Cornwall-on-Hudson in 1986.

Ed worked forty years for Bell Telephone Co. in Manhattan and Westchester beginning as a splicer helper before advancing to second line foreman and supervisor of Galvo Division. He coordinated the rebuilding of Manhattan’s phone service after the Second Avenue Fire in the mid 70s. As a consultant, he oversaw the laying of fiber optic cable in the State House in Albany.

As an active member of Knights of Columbus at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church for two decades, he initiated the Senior Thanksgiving Dinner and manned its kitchen for years with his cherished friends, Manny and Louie. He spearheaded many projects and services: food pantry and its deliveries, Bingo kitchen, mounting the flagpole, planting the Rectory Christmas Tree, coordinating sponsors for the acquisition of the bronze Stations of the Cross and statues of the North American Saints and overseeing their mounting. He loved bringing Santa to life for special needs students at BOCES in Goshen. He worked diligently to bring EWTN to our community on our cable provider.

He loved dancing with Irene. Their movement flowed like water to the rhythms of the 40s. He loved building his summer home in Westerlo, NY and collaborating with the Conservation Department to plant a forest of scotch pine and build and stock a one-acre pond. No job was impossible including moving telephone poles on his own to frame Irene’s garden. More recently, he was primary caretaker for his wife, Irene.

He is survived by his wife, Irene, his three children: Mary Diane Lynch and her husband, Robert, Edward J. Norey and his wife Victoria, and Virginia Norey; six
grandchildren: Daniel Lynch and his wife Elaine, Erica Koza and her husband Edward, Louise Lynch-O’Brien and husband Peter O’Brien, Edward J. Norey and wife Tanupreet Suri Norey, Danika Norey McCann and husband James McCann, Mary Norey-Miceli and husband Joseph Miceli, and five great-grandchildren: Liam, Adeline, Sandra, Clarence, and Olive.

His family would like to thank the compassionate staff at St. Luke’s Hospital, Newburgh and the Fishkill Center for Rehab, Beacon, and the devoted doctors, nurses, aides and therapists who diligently cared for our father in his last weeks.

While bereft with his loss, our family takes solace in the knowledge he is with his Creator and Savior whom he loved deeply.

Visitation will be held from 2pm-5pm on Sunday, December 2, at James F. Lulves Funeral Home, 9 Avenue A, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am on Monday, December 3 at Saint Francis of Assisi Church,145 Benkard Ave., Newburgh, NY. Interment will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery, Cornwall, NY.
