M. Clarke Calyer passed away at the age of 82 on March 9, 2016 in Middletown, NY, after a short illness. Clarke was born on July 11, 1933 to the late Sadie and Morris Calyer. Also known as “Mousy” and “Uncle Mo”, Clarke was raised in Cornwall, and was a multi-sport athlete in high school, where, after a high scoring basketball game, he became known in a school newspaper headline as “Cagey Clarke Calyer who Clicked for 21.” After completing his Associates degree at Orange Community College, Clarke proudly enlisted in the US Marines. Clarke continued his education at the University of Maryland, where he became a passionate, lifelong Terps fan. A diehard NY Giants fan as well, Clarke made sure his grandsons were outfitted with University of Maryland and Giants gear. His quest for knowledge did not end with his undergraduate education. After earning a law degree, Clarke earned a Masters degree in Public Administration at the University at Albany, where he continued studying history, long into adulthood.
A lover of history and genealogy, Clarke was a member of the Holland Society, as well as the Cornwall Chicken and Horse Thief Detecting Societies. He attended dinner meetings throughout the Hudson Valley, often accompanied by his sons. A vigorous debater, Clarke enjoyed engaging in lively discussions with family and friends.
After many years of working as a judge, Clarke retired from the NYS Department of Transportation. Retirement was spent on a diverse group of activities, such as playing golf and socializing at the Storm King Golf Club; studying history, especially events related to Ft. Ticonderoga and military history; going to Saratoga; enjoying his morning cup of tea; reading the NY Post; and visiting family, especially his three sons and grandsons.
Clarke was a beloved father, brother, grandfather, and uncle. He is survived by his brother Vincent (Irene) Calyer, former wife and friend Marguerite Calyer, sons Chris (Sue) Calyer, Kevin (Claudia) Calyer, Sean Calyer (Betty Chasan), and grandsons Evan, Luke, and Will as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, second cousins twice removed, and longtime friends. He will be truly missed.
As Clarke used to say every time one of the children drove away "low and slow.”
To remember Clarke in a special way, memorial contributions can be made in his honor online at www.fortticonderoga.org under the "donate" tab.
