Obituaries: Helen T. Castellano

HELEN T. CASTELLANO

Age 88 of Boynton Beach, Florida passed away peacefully on October 7, 2015.

Helen was born December 14, 1926 in Peekskill, New York to Genaro DeChristopher and Clementina Laudati. She is the last of thirteen siblings and was preceded in death by her dear husband, Col. Anthony “Ace” Castellano and beloved daughter, Christine Ann Castellano. She is survived by numerous members of the DeChristopher family and her extended family of DeJuan, Philip, Ian and Christine Cork.

Helen graduated from Peekskill High in 1944 and Fordham School of Nursing in 1948. She worked for Doctors Hospital, NYC and Peekskill Hospital, before coming to New York Military Academy (NYMA), Cornwall-on-the Hudson, NY as Head Nurse in 1951, where she met the love of her life, Ace. They were married that same year and their daughter Christine was born the following year.

Helen worked at NYMA for 22 years before retiring in 1986. She was loved by the faculty and students. In 2013, she received an award for service dedicated to “The Mother of the Corp” from the thousands of her sons and daughters who attended NYMA.

Helen and Ace retired to Boynton Beach in 1990, where she continued to volunteer her time and efforts with Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Lantana and the Delray Health Department.

She will be missed by her family and many friends.

A Memorial Mass and Celebration of her Life will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 1000 Lantana Road, Lantana, Florida on Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at 10:30 AM.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in her honor to the following organizations: Hospice of Palm Beach County Foundation, 5300 East Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33407 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
