Civil War Lecture at the library
|
| Laurence M. Hauptman |
November 05, 2012
On Monday, November 5th, the public is invited to Cornwall Public Library to hear Laurence M. Hauptman, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History at SUNY New Paltz, give a presentation entitled “The New York City Draft Riots”. The program, the fifth event in the Civil War Sesquicentennial lecture series at Cornwall Public Library, will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the library’s community room.
The New York City draft riots (July 13-July 16, 1863; known at the time as Draft Week) were violent disturbances in New York City that were the culmination of working-class discontent with new laws passed by Congress that year to draft men to fight in the ongoing American Civil War. The riots were the largest civil insurrection in American history.
Professor Hauptman has been teaching Native American and Civil War history at the college level for 40 years.
“Our Civil War lecture series is proving to be very popular and we draw a good number of interested individuals to each lecture,” said Karen LaRocca-Fels, Library Director. “With such an abundance of rich history right here around us – in our own communities and neighborhoods – we are proud to bring together such a fine group of Civil War experts for these programs.”
This program is supported by a grant from the New York Council for the Humanities and by Cornwall Public Library Foundation. Registration is not required. Further lectures in the Civil War Sesquicentennial Series at Cornwall Public Library are planned for the fall. Contact the library with any questions, at 534-8282.
