Trumpet & Piano Concert at Storm King

The Performers

John Charles Thomas, trumpeter, has performed in Europe, Asia, Canada and the U.S. as
soloist and chamber musician. He has played under many of the great conductors, including Sir Colin Davis, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Mutti, and Mstislav Rostropovich. He is currently the principal trumpet with the Ridgefield Symphony (Connecticut), associate principal trumpet of the Queens Symphony (NYC), and a member of the Grammy Award winning Chestnut Brass Company. John has performed regularly with the New York Philharmonic, Hudson Valley Philharmonic, and various Broadway shows. His solo appearances have included performances of Bach’s “Brandenburg Concerto No. 2”, Haydn’s “Trumpet Concerto”, Copland’s “Quiet City” and the Shostakovitch “Concerto for Trumpet and Piano. John has appeared in concert as the featured trumpet soloist with Manhattan Transfer. He can be heard on several film soundtracks including, S.W.A.T., Sphere, Final Fantasy, and Titus.


James Rensink, is a world-renowned musician who has performed at Lincoln Center as leading baritone, pianist, composer and conductor. He is Artist-in-Residence at The Storm King School. In 2001, Mr. Rensink received a special citation from the Congress of the United States for his outstanding achievements. In the 2004-2005 season, he appeared with members of the Vienna Philharmonic in the Mozart Requiem, the OCMEA Wind Ensemble of New York, and as soloist in Rhapsody in Blue; his arrangements premiered in Vienna as part of the Pitten Classics Festival, and he sang Scarpia in Tosca. Having sung more than seventy leading operatic roles in twenty-five countries, he is a favorite of conductors and audiences. His performing career has taken him to each of the fifty United States and to many leading cultural venues, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center. Internationally he is a favorite in such cities as Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Vienna, Tokyo, Shanghai and Manila. Mr. Rensink curtailed his worldwide travels to raise his triplet sons, Nate, Jake and Alex, the first triplets ever to be admitted to the Juilliard School Pre-College Division; all are now studying at McGill University in Montreal. He has appeared in solo recital with each of his sons at Lincoln Center.
