County Tree Lighting Holiday in Bloom
November 29, 2012
Orange County Executive Edward A. Diana and Commissioner Richard L. Rose of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation are pleased to announce that the “Holiday Lights in Bloom” program, a free event, will kick off at the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony on Thursday, November 29 at 7 p.m. in the Orange County Arboretum, Grove Street entrance to Thomas Bull Memorial Park, Route 416 in Montgomery, and will be open to the public on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, 5 pm to 8 pm from November 30 through December 23, and then daily, 5 pm to 8 pm from December 24 through December 30, but closed on Christmas Day.
“Our County Parks are great resources for our residents and their families,” said County Executive Diana. “The Holiday Lights in Bloom program is a wonderful way to celebrate the season with our family and friends.”
The Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony is a wonderful FREE family program that will feature Santa and Mrs. Claus arriving on a fire truck to greet everyone and then throw the switch and light up the tree and the tens of thousands of holiday lights that will illuminate the Arboretum. Santa and Mrs. Claus will also be on hand to visit with children and listen to their “wish lists” and everyone is invited to enjoy some yuletide treats and refreshments.
“Despite the winter chill in the air, the Arboretum will be ‘blooming’ with beautiful, garden themed light features in the forms of flowers, animals and insects, while the 9/11 Memorial Garden will be decorated in patriotic splendor,” said Commissioner Rose.
Children, and adults alike, will be charmed as they stroll through the Arboretum paths lined with lit trees. Everyone will enjoy trying to identify all of the different types of flowers and critters that light up the gardens. This year the light program will be expanded to include a “pond” created in lights and featuring an assortment of fish and waterfowl.
Volunteers from The Friends of the Orange County Arboretum will be on hand in the Ottaway Education Center to serve visitors free hot cocoa, sell handmade holiday crafts, and answer questions about the Arboretum. Be sure to make visiting this “ever growing” event part of your family’s holiday traditions.
