Washington's Headquarters Expanded Hours

April 23, 2014

Mark the date of April 23rd on your calendar! That’s when our expanded hours will begin for 2014. Doors to the Museum will open every Wednesday through Saturday, starting at 11:00 AM and closing at 5:00 PM. On Sunday, the hours of operation will be 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM.

Step back into the 18th century on a guided tour led by a historic interpreter. When entering the Hasbrouck House, you will be walking in the footsteps of history, treading on the same floors used by General and Mrs. Washington. The Washingtons resided in the Dutch-style farmhouse from April, 1782 until August of 1783, when it was referred to as Headquarters Newburgh. So much that took place within the walls of that house have come to affect how we still live today. It was during the Revolutionary War that the General, while there, rejected a monarchy in favor of a republic, quelled a potential rebellion within the military, announced the cease fire, composed a document that articulated his thoughts for the new republic and created the Badge of Military Merit, forerunner of the Purple Heart.

Want more? – then, come to our award-winning exhibit, “Unpacked & Rediscovered: Selections from Washington’s Headquarters’ Collection,” consisting of over 1,300 artifacts reflecting 160 years of America’s interest in acquisitions and featuring a variety of objects ranging from the whimsical to the functional.

See for yourself what a treasure we have under our roof in Newburgh’s East End Historic District. Our park offers scenic views of the Hudson River and its Highlands and the grounds are perfect for picnicking . Don’t take our word for it – just come to the first publicly owned historic site in the nation. We guarantee you won’t be disappointed and – most likely – you will want to come back again … and again … and again!

Admission to the Headquarters and Museum is: $4.00 for adults, $3.00 for seniors/students and children 12 and under are free.
