Special Presentation on Moby Dick
A Wisdom That is Woe: Allusions to Ecclesiastes in Moby-Dick
Presented by Stephen J. Bennett, PhD., Professor of Old Testament, Nyack College
Herman Melville’s novel Moby-Dick continues to draw interest, even more than 150 years after its publication. The biblical book of Ecclesiastes (also known as Qoheleth) also holds a fascination for many modern readers with its famous refrain “vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”
Melville actually quotes Ecclesiastes in Moby-Dick, and yet the similarities go much deeper. According to Dr. Bennett, both books elicit an interested response from the general public, and the suggestion that there is a connection between the two raises a great deal of curiosity. In this special presentation, Dr. Bennett will present his findings on this topic based on vast research and analysis.
