Writer/director/producer John J. Valadez will screen his Emmy-nominated PBS film “The Longoria Affair” on Tuesday, September 13 at 7 p.m. in the Mathematics, Science and Technology Center, Room 163, at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh.
The screening is open to the public, free of charge. Valadez will conduct a question and answer session immediately following the film.
“The Longoria Affair” portrays the dilemma of Felix Longoria, a Mexican American soldier killed in battle fighting the Japanese during World War II.
When Longoria’s body was sent home to Three Rivers, Texas, the town's only funeral parlor refused to allow his family to use the chapel because "the whites wouldn't like it."
The incident sparked national outrage and brought together two savvy political leaders: Senator Lyndon Johnson and Dr. Hector Garcia.
Their complex, sometimes contentious relationship would help Latinos become a national political force, help propel John Kennedy to the White House, and lead President Johnson to put his signature on the most important civil rights legislation of the 20th century.
“The Longoria Affair” is a co-production of John J. Valadez, WGBH/Boston and the Independent Television Service (ITVS) in association with Latino Public Broadcasting, with funds provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, PBS and the Houston Endowment.
