Tales from the Golden Age of Hollywood
|
| Carey Harrison will talk about his dad's Hollywood world. |
Take a ride this Saturday to Bannerman Island for a rare performance there by Carey Harrison, the youngest son of screen legends Sir Rex Harrison and Lilli Palmer, who will reminisce about a childhood spent avoiding kisses from Greta Garbo and having bedtime stories read to him by Noel Coward.
This one-man performance played to a sold out house in January 2011 at the Center for Performing Arts (CPA) at Rhinebeck. This time it takes place on that mysterious Bannerman’s Island in a joint fundraiser for The Woodstock Players and The Bannerman Castle Trust (BCT) for the restoration of the buildings on this tiny jewel.
The island, originally called Pollepel and now known as Bannerman Island, was considered haunted by some Indian tribes and thus became a refuge for those trying to escape them. These superstitions and others promoted by later Dutch sailors make for many fanciful tales. Even the name Pollepel (or Polopel) originated with a legend about a young girl named (Polly) Pell who was romantically rescued from the breaking river ice and landed on the island shore, where she promptly married her sweetheart, who rescued her and her companion. In 1900 the island was acquired by Francis Bannerman, a transplanted Scot.
The island is an apt setting for another transplant from the British Isles to bring you tales from the heady and often naughty days of old Hollywood where British ex-pats Sir Rex Harrison and David Niven played and sometimes clashed with American movie royalty.
Seating is limited and reservations are required. General Tickets are $55 (through Zerve at 800-979-3370 ) and BCT Friends and Fishkill Historical Society, $50 (through The Bannerman Castle Trust, Inc. You must call this number for discount 845-234-3204) . The excursion includes a cruise to the island, a Bannerman Island tour, and show. Refreshments available. The Pollepel river cruise boat will depart at 3pm. It will launch from Torches Landing in Newburgh. The show is sponsored by Bill Diamond Productions, and The Piccone Group of Companies.
