Joseph Thomson

November 02, 2011

Back in 1963 when he was first elected, Cornwall Town Justice Joseph Thomson was the youngest judge in New York State. Now, 48 years later, Judge Thomson is the longest-serving judge in the state and he is seeking re-election as the candidate of the Republican and Conservative Parties.

Thomson, age 77, graduated from Cornwall Central High School in 1951 and has worked in the legal field since getting degrees from Cumberland and Stanford Universities. He worked for Allstate Insurance Companies for more than three decades, then worked for law firms. A widower, he and his wife raised three daughters and he is active in the community, serving as a member of the Elks Club, the Black Rock Fish and Game Club, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, as well as the Mountainville Engine and Highland Engine Companies.

While he was part of a sensational murder trial early on in his career as judge, Thomson says that the most important part of his job is to give alternative sentences to teens who have “gone astray “in an effort to rehabilitate them. He says that the town court is the one closest to the people and that as a town justice you have to deal with things that happen in life.

One thing that has happened to Judge Thomson was a misdiagnosis of an ailment this summer that became complicated and ended up with the amputation of his right leg below the knee. He is currently doing rehabilitation at the Helem Hayes Hospital and expects to return to full duty in the near future.
