After serving as the town of Cornwall receiver of taxes for 33 years, Elizabeth Longinott entered the race for the town board in order to put her knowledge of how town government works to good use. She is the candidate of the Republican and Conservative parties.
Longinott, who turned 75 this year, has always thrown her enthusiasm and passion into every job she has had. She’s worked for the town building department and volunteered with the recreation department, where she is known for the trips to Wildwood she has organized for some 15 years. She says that she takes charge of the busloads of people who go on the trips, taking responsibility whenever problems arise.
That’s the same spirit she intends to apply to the town council if she is elected. She is not working at the moment, like four of the five current members, and Longinott says that will allow her to devote her efforts to solving problems that arise in town.
As the receiver of taxes, Longinott counseled many people and saw how paying taxes was difficult for some of them. That’s part of the reason why she says she will be careful about spending the town’s money, noting that in the current bad economy it is important to watch spending.
