Letters to the Editor: Trustee Differs With Mayor Over DPW

April 27, 2010

To The Editor:

The mayor recently received the engineer’s report on the Village DPW garage. There are repairs to be made. Sadly, the mayor is trying to frame the identification of these issues as some sort of victory for him and his cronies- he made sure his friends and the press got the results even before the Board of Trustees.

Here are some unfortunate facts that get in the way of that characterization:
1. There was no need to evacuate the building. Had it been a privately owned structure, a court order would have been required to evacuate. It would never have been granted.

2. We know this to be true, because on the day the mayor panicked and ordered the building evacuated, we also received a letter from the State code enforcement division confirming that the building was not in imminent danger.

3. The engineer’s report identifies code compliance problems but not makes no mention of any danger. At any point in this fiasco, the DPW could have been re-occupied.

4. Because of that foolhardy approach, the mayor has us wasting thousands of dollars on temporary facilities.

Equipment maintenance is being deferred. The employees who are based in that facility are enraged and we are receiving complaints from the union. I cannot understand his approach. He seems to be grandstanding at taxpayer expense.

This is a clear case of getting a gun, loading it and intentionally shooting at our collective foot. In any other municipality, the building would have stayed in business. Yes, the building needs repairs, and we’ll make them. If someone is liable, we’ll get the money. In the meantime, we need to focus on completing the job at hand. I call on the mayor to allow the DPW to re-occupy the DPW building and get back to work.

The mayor also condemns the Board relative to the code enforcement officer and the village attorneys, complaining that he is being handcuffed just when he needs the most help. Neither of these actions have anything to do with the DPW building, in spite of the mayor’s allegations. He also alleges that the Board has brought the village business to a halt. All he needs to do is complete the appointment of interim attorneys and make a decision relative to the code enforcement. He can either accede to the board’s desire to save money by delegating the function to the town, or he can make an interim appointment. He is the problem.

Finally: In a letter released today, the mayor tries to couple the volunteer firefighters to his self-inflicted woes. Draw your own conclusions about what sort of person he is.

Douglas Vatter
Trustee, Cornwall on Hudson

Comments:

Vatter, Edsall and kane you guys need to get aboard with the people you represent . There is a reason why we cant occupy the dpw building and it is not because of a building inspector or our mayor its because that building is unsafe and I consider your remarks and your bullying and your motions at the village board meeting contempt to the village you are here to represent! I also ask why the three of you hired an attorney that works for the town and in which I believe also represents Burns and Whalen? You are not putting the village in the peoples best interest!

Mr Wilkinson you are misinformed. I am no longer a Village employee no thanks to Gross, Gosda, & Gioia, or GGG for future reference. *note: kinda resembles 666 don't it? hmmm. . .but back to the point.

Sir, to litterally add insult to injury, I begrudgingly no longer serve the community I grew up in as a child, but after what my family has been through since 7/2/08, a day I will never forget. I am done with this little mud hut of a Village, emotionally we are drained.

Please leave us out of this.

GGG can take their petty grudges and stick'em because I know exactly why each one of them wanted me gone and played word games when it was time for me to get my job back when I was healthy as of Feb '10.

Once again:
The Faurot's are done, this is the last time I will say it. Leave us alone.

Is there a law comparative to Godwin's that addresses the 'demonic number reference'?

posted by Kate Benson on 04/28/10 at 12:01 AM

You're right, Kate. The language regarding this issue has become overheated with references to cronies", "good ol' boys", and now demonic comparisons.

I know and respect many of the people on both sides of the issue, and I can't imagine referring to them in this way. I think the questions about the DPW and other code violations (or non violations)must be answered in a clear, forthright manner, without obfuscation and name-calling.

Specifically, did the DPW have a CO? Was it worth the nearly $1 million pricetag? Was it safe and habitable? If not, who is responsible? And will the responsible parties be made to pay for the mis-management, if there was any, or will the residents of COH be on the hook for repairs and damages that might number in the hundreds of thousands of dollars?

Does the village have a lawyer who will speak for us?

These and other questions must be answered without all the rhetoric around them. You can be sure that many of us will be at the next village meeting to see if these questions are answered clealy and honestly.

I would like to thank Joe Gross for acting on the behalf of the community he represents. Mark Edsall, James Kane and Doug Vatter should try this for a change.
Mark Edsall, James Kane and Doug Vatter are not fooling anyone. You are clearly attempting to cover up the Moulton and Prodder follies. Once the audit of the entire process of the DPW building is available I am sure crimainal charges will be filed.

I cant believe all this is still going on from when I last visited Cornwall on Hudson back in febuary. This is where I grew up and I'm ashamed to say that anymore.I have followed this site for some time and know most of what is going on as well as the people involved and I would be telling an outright lie if I told you anything other than the 3 G'S are as CROOKED as they come. The ones who praise him or them are only puppeteers for the puppet master and continually try to make all the jibber jabber he speaks or writes look true when in fact its not.Read the report on the DPW facility and you tell me where it states that the building is unsafe, you cant because it doesn't . Where does it state that the building inspector shouldn't issue a CO ..it don't..You are making this all out to be a lot worse than what it is because you want to retaliate against people who don't see things in your eyes or you just don't like what they have done period. One day hopefully a majority of the people of COH will realize that the workers are suffering and by no means can be operating safely or effectively . I applaud them for the work they have done and continue to do as I'm sure they don't do it to make you look good but do it for the safety of the public.

I totally agree Mr. Coons. This is crazy, and indeed the only people suffering directly are the DPW employees who have been misplaced for far too long. And to Mr. Wilkinson, I am sure the DPW guys would love to speak out. However in the interest of keeping thier jobs, I am sure they are best to keep mum. Obviously they worked in the building and felt it to be safe. I dont believe anyone was injured due to this "unsafe facility".
Enough already, fix the building and stop wasting time and money. Let the boys get back to thier buisness so they can do thier jobs.

copy and paste from the record stating employee complaints about building sway when windy.

CORNWALL-ON-HUDSON ? The village?s Department of Public Works garage was vacated until further notice Friday.

Mayor Joe Gross said Building Inspector Bruce Yancewicz has received complaints from employees that the two-story building sometimes moves when it?s windy.

The building on Shore Road opened about five years ago, but so far village officials have been unable to find a certificate of occupancy or signed blueprints for it.

The matter is expected to be discussed at Monday night?s Board of Trustees meeting.

In the meantime, the DPW will use space at Village Hall, the Fire Department and the Water Department.

Rest assure Mr Wilkinson , I can guarantee you one thing and that is I know alot more than you might even think I know as I said I was born and raised there and know a graet deal of people so im sure that my info would certainly make your head spin. Most people believe as they see it but in this case people believe what others want them too..You still are probaly confused but I know where the truth lies.So Mr Wilkinson its not what the website taught me, its the people I know . I only said i was following the website not learning from it..

But "The Truth" is subjective, Mr. Coons, so how can you claim to know it, and even worse, tell someone else that they don't?

How are you Mr. Warren ? Been A long time since I have heard your name. Time flies and it seems like yesterday that we hung out as kids growing up..Its good to hear from you..

Mr. Coons,

I won't label you >>>silly<<< as others have done. I totally agree with your posts. Do not let commentators calling you >>>silly<<< prevent you from posting.

I and MANY agree with you totally. The past trustee election the voters spoke loud and clear. Next March we will do so again. Never let anyone labeling you >>>silly<<< scare you from posting.
