The Business of Music: The Basics to Starting a Rewarding Music Career



Are you a musician, performer, or composer who wants to learn how to make money from your art? Are you an organization with members that fit that description? The Orange County Arts Council presents the second in the 2010 workshop series, What Every Artist Wants to Know, but Is Afraid to Ask, on Tuesday, March 23 from 7-9pm. The topic will be The Business of Music: The Basics to Starting a Rewarding Music Career; and a panel of experts will present to help musicians, composers, and performers enhance skills, communication, networking, collaboration, and entrepreneurial success in the marketplace. The workshop, sponsored by Jacobowitz and Gubits, is held at the Arts Council office, 23 White Oak Drive, Sugar Loaf and the cost is $15, or free for Artist & Organization Members.

The panel consists of:

Mark Egan is considered to be one of the most respected and in-demand electric bassists on the music scene today. His unique fretless bass sound and style is both distinctive and versatile and his musical contributions incomparable. With three platinum & three gold albums to his credit. Mark has recorded with the likes of many Classic Rock groups that has added to his musical prowess including many movies and television shows including News and numerous award winning television commercials.

Contemporary jazz guitarist Jeff Ciampa has worked and toured with some of the most demanding practitioners. His fluid, melodic style steeped in the jazz tradition, continues to inspire fellow musicians and listeners worldwide. Jeff studied at the Berklee School of Music under the tutelage of guitarist extraordinaire Pat Methany. Eventually Jeff moved to Warwick where he teamed up with Mark Egan and drummer Danny Gottlieb and performed to sold out audiences locally and at major jazz festivals.

Maestro David Dworkin has led orchestras across America and abroad, and served as Conductor and Artistic Consultant. Mr. Dworkin conducted the Philharmonic on the Hudson for fifteen years, overseeing its transition from a college orchestra to professional status, and leading the orchestra in its enthusiastically-received Carnegie Hall debut. Mr. Dworkin also performed for many years with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. An avid chamber musician, Mr. Dworkin has performed throughout the world. David Dworkin is a graduate of The Juilliard School and Columbia University.

Bob Rosen has been playing and teaching jazz in the New York City area for the past 30 years. He has been on the faculty at Friends Seminary for the past 23 years where he started a jazz program for middle and upper school students that is based on small group improvisation. He was chair of the Performing Arts Dept. at Friends for 10 years. From 1986-96 he was Asst. Conductor of the All City Jazz Ensemble sponsored by the NYC Bd. of Education and in 1994 he founded and directed the Meetinghouse Jazz Orchestra, a 16 piece jazz ensemble that has rehearsed weekly out of a historic Quaker Meetinghouse in New York City. He has a degree from NYU in music education.

The cost for this workshop is $15 or free for artist and arts organization members of the Council.
