Letters to the Editor: Kane Announces Candidacy for Trustee

January 02, 2010

To the Editor:

I write this letter to announce my candidacy for the position of Village Trustee. My family and I have been village residents since late 2001 and my wife, Kelly is a special education teacher at AHRC in Middletown, New York and my son, Mike, is a second grader at St. Thomas of Canterbury. I am originally from Rockland County and I am a partner in a small law firm located in Pearl River. I spent several years in public service with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, the MTA Inspector General, and the Moreland Act Commission investigating the NYC School Construction Authority. I entered private practice in 2002 with a primary focus on wills, trusts and estate planning. Lastly, I am also a soldier (LTC) in the U.S. Army Reserve, currently with the 4th Legal Support Organization, providing legal services to soldiers, retirees and their families in the NY area.

I seek to become a Trustee to continue my public service and to concentrate on providing a workable budget and controlled spending, while supporting the continuation of our dependable village services. The Village Board must focus on being fiscally responsible, however, they must be cognizant of the potential adverse impact that certain budget reductions, done for the purpose of shrinking debt, may have on meeting Village obligations and community safety. While debt reduction is important, the Board cannot ignore necessary future capital infrastructure expenditures, otherwise by doing so, the monetary impact is left to a future generation instead of minimizing it by spreading it across a few. Thus, a long term capital plan should be drafted and take into account the immediate debt reduction strategy. Additionally, the proposed Village Master Plan was completed over 20 months ago and the Board needs to move forward and continue to make timely, real progress in adopting the Plan, with or without appropriate changes or amendments.

I am confident that with my experience, dedication to public service, and objectivity, I will be an asset to the Board and the residents in the challenging years ahead. I look forward to meeting with Village residents, seeking their input, and discussing ideas to make this an even better Village.

Thank you.

James P. Kane
