May 11, 2023

CATALYTIC CONVERTOR THEFTS

The Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson Police Department is currently investigating three (3) separate thefts of catalytic convertors from motor- vehicles which occurred during the overnight hours on Friday, May 05, 2023, between 3:45am and 4:45am. The vehicles that had their catalytic convertors removed were (2) Honda’s and (1) Acura. The thefts occurred in the Cliffside Park area of Cornwall-on-Hudson (two on Grandview Avenue), and one on the Boulevard.

These thefts may only take a minute to complete as the suspect(s) will generally utilize a Sawzall/ Reciprocating Tool to remove the convertor.

There’s been numerous incidents within Orange County as well as the entire country where catalytic convertors are being removed/ stolen from motor- vehicles as the metals contained in the catalytic convertor, (platinum, palladium, and rhodium), are among the most expensive mined materials. Foreign vehicles, such as Honda, Nissan, Kia, Toyota and Hyundai, etc, generally have the most value in their catalytic convertors.

Thieves can generally fetch between $250.00 to $1,000.00 for each catalytic convertor that they steal.

You can take the following precautions to avoid the theft of your vehicles’ catalytic convertor: park your vehicle inside your garage, have your property well lit at night with motion lights, consider purchasing a Ring Home Security Camera Device.
