Obituaries: Philip J. Hopp

April 11, 2022

 PHILIP J. HOPP
January 3, 1942 – April 9, 2022
Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY

Philip J. Hopp, of Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY peacefully entered into eternal rest on April 9, 2022 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was 80 years old.

The son of the late Valentine J. Hopp and Agnes E. (Schmidt) Hopp, he was born on January 3, 1942 in Flushing, NY.

Philip honorably and proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army with the 82nd Airborne Division and subsequently served at home and retired as a Firefighter with FDNY Engine 94 in the Bronx, NY. He then worked as an HVAC technician at the United States Military Academy West Point.

Philip was an active member of St. Thomas of Canterbury Roman Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, Council 7460. Philip enjoyed painting and was a talented photographer, often capturing the beauty of the Hudson Valley with his sharp eye for light and color. He shared his artistic talents, most notably with a photography exhibition at the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum. Every morning he enjoyed playing Wizard 101, an on-line game where he connected with players from around the world who then became friends. Philip was known to always have a smile and was quick to crack a joke, share a laugh, have a conversation and give trusted advice. Everyone was a friend and all were welcomed into his home. He enjoyed fishing and boating, but most of all spending time with his three best friends, his grandsons, whom he loved beyond measure. He frequently took them out to lunch and a movie, on treasure hunts, and he could always be found cheering them on at their games and concerts. As far as grandfathers go, Phil was the very best.

Philip is survived by his beloved wife, Gloria (Carolan) Hopp at home; his son Michael S. Hopp of Charlotte, NC; daughter Kelli A. (Hopp) Falk and her husband Bradley of Newburgh, NY; grandchildren Connor, Cameron and Jayden Falk of Newburgh, NY; sister Theresa Soldano and her husband Vincent of Cornwall, NY; brother Richard Hopp and his wife Carol of Rocky Point, NY; and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss him immensely.

The Hopp family would like to extend a special thank you to Missy and Steve Berean for their kind and loving support during this difficult time.

Based on new CDC guidelines adopted by NYS, fully vaccinated individuals do not need to wear masks or be socially distanced, but unvaccinated individuals must continue to wear masks and be socially distanced in the funeral home.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, April 18th at Quigley-Sullivan Funeral Home, Inc., 337 Hudson Street, Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 19th at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, 340 Hudson Street, Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY. Cremation will take place at Cedar Hill Crematory, Middle Hope, NY.
