Obituaries: Dorothy I. Snyder Lawrence

November 8, 1921 – May 29, 2021
Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY

Dorothy I. Snyder Lawrence passed away on Saturday, May 29, 2021 at Montgomery Nursing Home after a short illness. She was 99 years old. Dorothy, the daughter of the late Joseph and Ida Bennewitz Snyder was born November 8, 1921 in Union City, NJ and spent her early years in West New York, NJ and Oakland, NJ. She started her education in a one room schoolhouse in Oakland, NJ. It was an experience she always liked to remember. When she was in 7th grade, the family moved to Cornwall- on-Hudson. NY, where she lived the rest of her life.

Dorothy was a Secretary in the Cornwall School System for many years. From there she worked at The United States Military Academy at West Point, NY as Administrative Assistant in the Cadet Extracurricular Activities Division until retirement. In addition to being a loving wife and mother, Dorothy enjoyed volunteering. She was a volunteer in The Cornwall Ambulance Corps, The Ladies Auxiliary of the Storm King Engine Co. #2, and The Cornwall Hospital for many years. As a member of the Cornwall Presbyterian Church, she was an Elder, taught Sunday school, sang in the Choir, was Secretary in the church office and helped out as needed. When she wasn't serving her community, Dorothy loved cooking, gardening, knitting, crocheting, reading and vacationing at her “home away from home”, Rockport, MA annually with husband Clint.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband: Clinton S. Lawrence; her brother: Howard I. Snyder; her daughter: Loretta Gross; and granddaughter: Barbara Gross. Survivors include her son John M. Lawrence and his wife Dorothy of New Windsor, NY; and one grandson.

There will be no visitation. Burial will be private in Willow Dell Cemetery, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY. . A memorial Service will be held at a later date at The Cornwall Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to The Cornwall Presbyterian Church, 222 Hudson Street, Cornwall-on-Hudson. NY 12520
