Obituaries: Orrin Leon Lee Babcock

February 01, 2021

 ORRIN LEON “LEE” BABCOCK
March 6, 1940 – January 30, 2021
Cornwall, NY

Orrin Leon “Lee” Babcock, of Cornwall, NY entered into eternal rest on January 30, 2021 at his residence. He was 80 years old.

The son of the late Orrin Geroe Babcock and Nellie May (Baisley) Babcock, Lee was born on March 6, 1940 in Cornwall, NY.

Lee was a retired Heavy Equipment Operator and Technician for NOVA Contracting in Newburgh, NY.

Lee was very fond of his childhood and spoke often about spending time working with his grandfather, Arthur and other relatives in Black Rock Forest. He spent time feeding the workhorses and mules, gathering tools and looking for fire hazards such as glass bottles that were a danger to the forest. He learned to drive a dump truck at 8 years old, after Arthur fashioned blocks onto the pedals and stacked the seat with pillows.

Lee was a life-long aspiring contractor, purchasing the shell of a house in Cornwall in 1973 and spending countless hours building it into a beautiful home with his wife, Ruth. When he wasn’t working on his home, he was in his garage, tinkering with his Model A Fords, or anything that had an engine. He loved to build, reconstruct and repair. He had an immense knowledge of construction, mechanics and local history, and will truly be missed by those that knew him. He had a special bond with his best friend and brother-in-law, Reuben “Sonny” Conklin and shared many adventures with him throughout his life.

Lee was predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years: Ruth Marie (O’Dell) Babcock in 2016. He is survived by his children: Deborah Lee (Babcock) Monroe and her husband Timothy, Laurieann (Babcock) Skinner and her husband Laurence, and Brian Leon Babcock and his wife Yuko; his grandchildren: Adam and Shannon Monroe, Lee Laurence Skinner, and Bryce and Brady Babcock; his great-grandchildren: Brianna and Brody Monroe and Connor Peltack; and his sister: Joan Beverly (Babcock) Conklin. Lee was predeceased by his siblings: Ronald Geroe and Elting Traford Babcock.

Lee was laid to rest beside his loving wife, Ruth, at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Mountainville, NY.

Due to the public health concerns of the Corona Virus (Covid-19), memorial services for Lee will be held at a later date.
