Most Viewed Photos of 2011

It wasn’t just hard news that people wanted to read about in 2011, they also looked at photos taken of the Hudson Highlands and Cornwall area. Dozens of photos showed the range of damage caused by Tropical Storm Irene (see them here) but dozens more captured moments of scenic beauty throughout the year.

Coyotes and Eagles

Photos of animals in the wild attracted the most interest from readers, starting with Lynn Goldman’s photos of a couple of coyotes outside her Boulevard home.

Maureen Moore took some photos of an eagle and a turkey vulture sparring in the air that many people returned to see several times.

Historic Houses Uncovered

The 19th-century wood frame houses along Forge Hill Road were uncovered this year when the lot around them was cleared of old brush and vines. Frank Ostrander stopped to take some photos of the buildings that are uninhabitable today.

An October Snowstorm

The October Surprise that dumped a foot of snow on Cornwall at the end of that month left hundreds of trees toppled and huge branches broken off. Residents were out of power for days afterwards.

Independence Day

Back in July, during the annual Independence Day parade, a flock of geese crossed Hudson Street and Simon Gruber’s camera phone photos of the geese parade were an instant hit. Check out other scenes from the annual 4th of July celebration here.

Bears and Blackbirds

The black bear population is thriving in the area and action photographer Connie Wagner was ready when a bear visited her one Sunday in May. A month later, Maureen Moore was observing an eagle when she saw a red wing blackbird flying around the big bird. Her photos tell the story.

After the Ball Drop

Just a year ago, Kathi Ellick took a stroll in the village on New Year’s Day 2011 and found the remnants of the previous night’s party and a church covered in snow.

Snow and More Deer

A month later, as the snow piled up and the ice stayed frozen, Jim Lawless went down to the riverfront and found geese walking around in the creaking ice and snow. Carol Stein took pictures of herd of deer in her backyard in Cornwall as they looked for food to eat. Weeks later, Frank Ostrander took photos of Storm King Mountain newly re-coated in ice.

After a Summer Storm

Finally, at the height of summer, Tom Doyle went to the Moodna Valley where he took this photo after a summer storm.

These are just a taste of the hundreds of photos sent in by readers in 2011. If you see a scene that you think captures the beauty of this area, take a photo and send it in to share with all.
