Cancer Survivorship Summit



Saturday, June 8, 8am to 4pm, the Hudson Valley Cancer Resource Center will premier the region’s first Cancer Survivorship Summit at SUNY Orange Newburgh in Kaplan Hall. The conference invites cancer patients, cancer survivors, caregivers and healthcare professionals to a variety of practical, educational and supportive workshops for life during and after cancer.

The conference will begin with keynote speaker, Maureen Killackey, MD, Deputy Physician –in-Chief Medical Director of Regional Care Network at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Special guests who will be leading several of the 15 workshops include Matthew Zachary, founder of Stupid Cancer.org, the nation’s leading organization for young adult cancer survivors, Cancer and Careers, a national resource for cancer and employment issues; authors Elizabeth Bailey of “The Patient’s Checklist” and Andrea Raynor, 9/11 Ground Zero chaplain and breast cancer survivor, of “The Voice that Calls You Home”.

The Tutu Project Foundation will be the featured lunch plenary. Professional photographer Bob Carey and his wife, Linda, a breast cancer survivor, will talk about their photography project and book, “Ballerina”. Additional workshops throughout the day will focus on relevant survivorship issues, including the rising incidence of HPV (human papillomavirus) related cancers and how to protect oneself, a “Men-Only” survivorship workshop, survivorship care plans after treatment and healthy eating and fitness plans after diagnosis. Two workshops will concentrate on self care for the cancer patient and for the caregiver to reduce stress and anxiety. The workshop, “Palliative Care is not Hospice” will be led by Maura DelBene, an experienced hospice and palliative care practitioner and a panel workshop on why cancer patients need an advocate will be moderated by Dr. Vicki Breitbart, director of the Health Advocacy Graduate Studies Program at Sarah Lawrence College.

A Not-for-Profit Expo with 40+ cancer related regional and national organizations, healthcare groups and hospitals will run concurrently during the day.

Registration fee is $25 before June 5 and $30 at the door. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

ABOUT THE HUDSON VALLEY CANCER RESOURCE CENTER

Hudson Valley Cancer Resource Center is a 501(c) 3, not-for-profit organization whose mission is to advocate for and connect the Hudson Valley community of people living with and affected by cancer with informational and educational resources and support services to improve quality of life through all stages of the cancer journey. Casey MacDonald, cancer patient advocate and lymphoma survivor, created the organization after her husband, father and best friend were diagnosed with incurable cancers within six months of each other. The center’s website, www.hudsonvalleycancer.org, is a navigational tool for cancer patients, cancer survivors, their families, caregivers and healthcare professionals to find necessary resources, programs and services needed to help ease the burden of challenges that accompany a cancer diagnosis. National, regional and local resources listed on the website include financial assistance, prescription assistance, co-pay assistance, lodging during treatment, insurance information, medical supplies, career and cancer information, support groups, hospice information, bereavement care, palliative care, camps, retreats, legacy trips and scholarships. There is also a news bulletin of latest cancer news, app of the week feature, blog, and regional events calendar.
