On Sunday, April 14 at 10 a.m. come to the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum to learn about Garlic Mustard, one of the most common invasive plants in our region, at the Outdoor Discovery Center on Muser Drive across from 174 Angola Road, Cornwall.
Join Environmental Educators Judy Onufer and Carl Heitmuller to learn how to identify this weed, how it got here and why it has become such a problem. “This invasive not only aggressively crowds out native wildflowers that pollinators rely on, but it is also toxic to some caterpillars or butterflies that lay their eggs on its leaves, mistaking it for a native plant called toothwort,” said Judy. “The caterpillars die, which quickly wipes out entire populations of some butterfly species where Garlic Mustard has become widespread.” After the program, head outside to help the museum educators identify and remove this invasive plant from areas of the Outdoor Discovery Center. Great for volunteer hours!
Come dressed in sturdy boots or shoes, long pants and clothing that can get dirty. This program is for adults with or without children and children ages 5 and older and is free for everyone! For more information go to hhnaturemuseum.org or call 845-534-5506 x204.
