An Artist's Response to Human Rights

Exhibit Opening, Artists’ Reception at SUNY Orange Middletown’s Orange Hall Gallery

Orange County Executive Edward A. Diana and the Orange County Human Rights Commission invite residents to attend the exhibit opening and reception for “An Artist’s Response to Human Rights” in recognition of International Human Rights Day. The opening reception and exhibit will be hosted at Orange Hall Gallery on SUNY Orange’s Middletown campus from 1 to 3 p.m., Sunday, December 9. The exhibit will remain on display through Sunday, December 18.

Sponsored by the Orange County Human Rights Commission, the exhibit debut coincides with Human Rights Day, an international celebration of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations on December 10, 1948. Following World War II, it was the first international recognition that all human beings have fundamental rights and freedoms.

“An Artist’s Response to Human Rights” features original works of art submitted by Orange County high school juniors and seniors. Each piece will depict the artist’s interpretation of any one of the 30 Articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The goal of the art exhibit, which is being co-chaired by Human Rights Commissioners Kathleen Francese and Fred Cook, is to raise awareness among high school students of the importance of human rights. Approximately 80 pieces from area students have been submitted for display.

“An Artist’s Response to Human Rights” is presented by the Orange County Human Rights Commission in collaboration with SUNY Orange and the Orange County Arts Council.

The Orange County Human Rights Commission was established in 1970 to foster mutual respect and understanding among all racial, religious, and nationality groups in the County. For more information about the exhibit or the Human Rights Commission, visit the Commission’s pages on the Orange County Government website at www.orangecountygov.com or call 615-3680.
