Lecture: Dead Sea Scrolls at MSMC
The Catholic and Dominican Institute at Mount Saint Mary College will present the second annual Messiah lecture: “The Messianic Idea in the Dead Sea Scrolls,” March 29 at 7 p.m., Hudson Hall Auditorium, on the campus at 330 Powell Avenue, Newburgh.
The public is invited to this free event which is also sponsored by the Mount’s philosophy and religious studies program.
Dr. Lawrence Schiffman, a scrolls expert and vice provost for undergraduate education at Yeshiva University, will speak about the Dead Sea Scrolls including the usual one-messiah of David concept as well as a two-messiah scheme--messiahs of Aaron and Israel.
The illustrated lecture, which also includes comments on the End of Days, will explore these views and their relevance to the messianic ideas of Christianity and Rabbinic Judaism.
A question and answer session will follow.
In addition to the Dead Sea Scrolls, Schiffman is a specialist in Judaism in late antiquity, the history of Jewish law, and Talmudic literature.
He was featured in the PBS Nova series “Secrets of the Dead Sea Scrolls,” in BBC documentaries on the scrolls, on the McNeil-Lehrer Report, and on a Discovery special. He also appeared in the educational series “Mysteries of the Bible,” on Arts and Entertainment (A&E), and “Kingdom of David” on PBS, as well as in documentaries produced by CNN and National Geographic. He holds bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degrees from Brandeis University.
