Gamelan Dharma Swara
Kicking off our new World Music and Culture Series is the exciting performance by Gamelan Dharma Swara, New York City's Balinese gamelan, on Friday, October 14th at 7pm in the Great Room, Kaplan Hall 101 at the Newburgh Campus of SUNY Orange.
The dancers of Gamelan Dharma Swara will present a program of traditional and contemporary Balinese dances.Based at the Indonesian Consulate in New York City, Gamelan Dharma Swara is one of the premier Balinese music-and-dance ensembles outside Bali. It has been featured by the New York Times and on NPR's "All Things Considered." Gamelan Dharma Swara has performed at Symphony Space, Jazz at Lincoln Center, (Le) Possion Rouge, Asia Society, and at numerous universities in the greater Tri-State area. In July 2010, it became the first non-Balinese group to compete against professional Balinese ensembles at the Bali Arts Festival.
