Diego and Frida: Mexican Art and National Identity
Diego & Frida: Mexican Art and National Identity, a lecture by Dr. Susan Aberth of Bard College will take place on Tuesday, October 4 at 4pm in the Great Room, Kaplan Hall 101 at the Newburgh Campus of SUNY Orange. Come explore the rich cultural milieu that Diego Rivera and his wife, Frida Kahlo, lived in and influenced in a lecture by Dr. Susan Aberth. As important cultural figures in working to shape the artistic climate of post-Revolution Mexico, Rivera's large-scale public murals presented a utopian vision of Mexico's pre-Columbian past, indigenous population, and the socialist future of the nation while Kahlo expressed her intense love of Mexico in different ways. Performing Mexicanidad in her choice of dress and home décor, Kahlo also incorporated nationalistic themes into her more intimate and highly personal paintings. This event is free and open to the public.
