Lecture on historic Battle of Midway
Cornwall Library to host lecture on historic Battle of Midway
CORNWALL – The Cornwall Public Library will host a lecture, “Midway!” from 3:30-5 p.m Oct. 7. Aviation historian Matt Soltis will present the lecture.
Midway was America’s long sought-after opportunity not only for revenge, but to put Japan on the defensive in World War II. Looking back in a historical context, we can see that Midway showed the decisiveness of the carrier-borne aircraft. In this lecture, Soltis will examine how the Battle of Midway is a shining example of the airplane’s strength in battle.
Soltis’s interest in aviation history was sparked during the centennial anniversary of flight in 2003, when a full-scale Wright Flyer was constructed for a celebratory flight at Kitty Hawk. Since then, he has taken great joy in building models of historic aircraft. He has extensively studied everything from pioneers such as Glen Curtiss and Octave Chanute, to The Red Baron’s “Flying Circus.” In 2015, Soltis earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Mount Saint Mary College.
The lecture is free, and registration is not required.
