The Great Bannerman Island Kayak Race

The Bannerman Castle Trust is sponsoring a Kayak Race on September 17 to raise funds for Bannerman Castle.

The Bannerman Castle Trust, Inc. and M & T Bank are sponsoring a kayak race to Bannerman Island. The Great Bannerman Island Kayak Racee will leave Kowawese Park in New Windsor, NY on September 17, 2011 at 9 am. Kayakers will race to the finish line at Bannerman Island, where participants will be treated to a walk on Bannerman Island and hot dogs and hamburgers before their return trip to Kowawese Park.

Proceeds from the race will help with the stabilization of the iconic “Bannerman Tower” (Main Castle) on Pollepel Island.

The Bannerman Castle Trust, Inc, has come a long way since 1993. In spite of last year’s devastating collapse, 2011 has proved to be a banner year. The BCT Volunteer Gardeners have completed renovating additional Bannerman trails and have created a new performance space in the Look Out Garden. Last month, Rex Harrison’s son Carey Harrison performed to a sellout crowd. On September 25th, Irish American Folk Singer Danny Quinn will perform a benefit concert.

The Bannerman Castle Trust, Inc. completed Phase One of the stabilization of the Bannerman Residence. The project was funded through an Environmental Protection Fund matching grant, including funding from The Dutchess County Industrial Development Agency, The Dyson Foundation, Senator Stephen Saland member item as well as many private individuals and foundations. The Bannerman Residence was only last year, no more than a shell with no roof or floors. Happily, the residence now sports a new roof and new floor system and stabilized concrete inside the house.

In the winter of 2010, two and half walls collapsed on the iconic “Tower”. This has prompted many concerns about saving the remaining structures on the island. Architects Jan Hird Pokorny Associates from NYC and Marchetti Consulting Engineers have been tasked to create the stabilization design, which will require workers to be suspended 200 feet high on a crane, sitting on a barge next to the island, as they stabilize the walls with cables, bands and cribbing.

Our goal is to raise a minimum of $20,000 from the race that will help us with the funds needed to perform Phase One of the stabilization of the Main Castle Structures.

You can help with the preservation efforts by getting into the race, or by making a tax deductible donation online at www.bannermancastle.org.

There is a $20 entrance fee. Contestants must raise pledges of $100 or more. Kayaks will be available for rent by advance reservation. We encourage you to bring your own kayaks. This is a great opportunity to help save the iconic ruins of Bannerman Island and to have a great day on the river and a chance to visit the island. To register, go to our website, www.bannermancastle.org or call us at 845-234-3204.
