County Museums Opening Day
Three County-owned museums, Hill-Hold, Brick House, and the Farmers Museum, will open for the 2011 season on Saturday, May 14.
Hill-Hold Museum is the site of a 1769 homestead that is furnished to reflect the life of a Hudson Valley farm in the 1830s. This was the era of candlelight, fireplace heat, home grown food, and homespun clothing. In addition to the house, Hill-Hold has several outbuildings, including a one room school house, summer kitchen, granary, and privy. Hill-Hold is located on Route 416 between Montgomery and Campbell Hall.
Brick House Museum is a 1768 home that has not been restored to reflect a particular era, but rather the passage of time for one family that occupied the house for more than 200 years. Among the many rooms, there is a Georgian parlor that exemplifies 18th century style and a Victorian parlor that reflects the Civil War period. Brick House is located between Newburgh and Montgomery on Route 17K.
At the Orange County Farmers Museum visitors will take a step back in time to a more simple period before today’s many advances in technology. Opening day will be a family fun day featuring arts and crafts, vendors, a planting station, a bouncy house, saw mill and blacksmith demonstrations, and food concessions. A tour of the museum will show guests how the farmer lived, built his home and barns, and grew his own food. There’s something for everyone.
Hill-Hold Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Brick House Museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Admission for each is $3 for adults and $2 for children. Orange County Farmers Museum is open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to
