Washington's Headquarters on Independence Day
Grand Celebration at Washington's Headquarters: July 4: 12 Noon
Birthdays are special. So, when you are 161 years old, it is a truly memorable occasion. Washington’s Headquarters, in Newburgh, knows that. On July 4th, “The Grand Celebration: The Red, White and Blue Pageant” will be the theme for the day, honoring the Headquarters’ birth on July 4th 1850 as the first historic site in the nation.
Festivities get under way at 12 Noon with greetings and the raising of the flag by special guests, “General and Mrs. Grant.” The Dutchess Community College Student Barbershop Quartet will sing the “Star Spangled Banner” and other appropriate selections.
Next, line up for our parade in the park! Dress up your children in red, white and blue. As you stroll about showing off your patriotic costumes, judges will select prize winners. Categories are most creative, most historical, the best red, white, and blue decorated stroller, and the grand prize for best spirit. Trivia games will be played in the Museum and the Golden Songsters will sing in the park. Free tours of the historic headquarters will be given every half hour.
In commemoration of the event and sponsored by Regina Angelo and the Friends of the State Historic Sites of the Hudson Highlands, admission to the site on July 4th will be free.
